FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 17 seed Lake Tahoe Community College men's soccer team prevailed in an overtime thriller, 3-1, over No. 16 Clovis College in the 3C2A NorCal Regional Playoffs, Round 1, Wednesday afternoon.
After a late PK by Clovis (8-8-4) forced the extra session, Oscar Mendoza scored on a beautiful curling free kick 19 minutes into overtime to make it 2-1 before Quinton Alewine put it out of reach with a breakaway score in the final minutes.
Brandon Carreto got the scoring started for the Coyotes off an assist from Angel Gonzalez early in the second half.
The Coyotes (11-5-5) will travel to take on the No. 1 overall seed Santa Rosa (16-1-3) on Saturday at 2pm in Round 2.
In 2023, LTCC became the first No. 16 seed in NorCal playoff history to beat a No. 1 seed when it defeated Skyline. The Coyotes will look to do it for the second time in three years and become the first-ever No. 17 seed to knock off a top seed.
